The Denis Horgan Social Bowling Club was started in 1998. The club is named after the famous Banteer athlete Denis Horgan from Fermoyle. Denis Horgan was a national and world champion in the 16lb shot in the 1890s and also won a silver medal in the London Olympics.
The club originally started on the Duinch road Banteer, but moved to the Ball Alley, Lyre road where it is presently based. The committee at the time were John O’ Flynn, chairman, Donal Cashman, honorary secretary and Anne Flynn as treasurer.
The club now rotates between two roads, the Ball Alley road operates on a Wednesday night for the summer season and then moves to Sally’s Cross, Kanturk every Saturday for the winter.
The club runs competitions through winter and summer. In the summer there is the Jackie Daly perpetual shield, this competition starts in April and finishes in September. Players compete in different categories; singles, doubles and team events. For a win a player collects two points and runner up collects one point, and at the end of season the player with highest points wins this prestigious shield.
At the end of the evenings bowling an accuracy competition takes place, this is for the John Cummins accuracy shield which is also presented at the end of the season.
The winter competitions at Sally’s Cross are run on similar lines to the Jackie Daly shield. Some of the players also take part in the Sally’s Cross Christmas hamper doubles competition.
The club is always well represented in the Munster social club competitions. The Denis Horgan club was the first club to win the Liam O’Keefe cup in 1999, the team that year was Vincent Kiley, John Francis Flynn and Martin Maddigan. Success has eluded the club for many years after that, taking second and third prizes, but never a successful bid to claim outright honours!
The club also goes on various outings during the year to visit other clubs around the country, the club has travelled to Clare, Wexford and Laoise.
The AGM and presentations are held on the one night, usually in Caroline’s Bar, Killcorney.
Over the years the club has gained many sponsors, whom the members are very appreciative of.

The Denis Horgan bowling club held their AGM recently at the club premises. Chairman, Ned Kelleher opened the meeting. He thanked everybody for their efforts during the year and said all competitions were run off on time. Hon secretary, John Breen gave a detailed account of the various competitions that were run off during the year and all other events associated with the club.
